The SUNY Cortland running back
Ashton Capone, Alfred University linebacker
Joe Copp and SUNY Morrisville senior linebacker
Ernesto Mitchell were named to the D3football.com Team of the Week on Tuesday, November 1. This is the eighth week at least one Empire 8 student-athlete has earned the weekly accolade in 2022.
Capone, who was named the Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Weej on Monday, ran 47 times for 282 yards, both Cortland single-game records, and scored two touchdowns in the Red Dragons' 31-8 win at Alfred. The victory clinched Cortland's second consecutive Empire 8 title and NCAA tournament automatic berth. Capone ran for a 2-yard score late in the first half to give Cortland a 14-0 lead, and his 5-yard TD run on his final carry with 2:09 remaining gave him the school rushing yardage record, which was previously 281 yards.
Copp, who garnered his second D3football.com Team of the Week honor, led the Alfred defense with a game-high 22 tackles against Cortland team. Copp finished with 11 solo tackles and 11 assisted tackles. The effort for Copp marks the fourth-highest tackles in program history for Alfred in a single game. Copp became the first player to record 20 or more tackles since the 2016 season for the Saxons.
Mitchell earned D3football.com Team of the Week honors for the third time this season. The Empire 8 co-Defensive Player of the Week, Mitchell led the defensive efforts for Morrisville State over the weekend, posting a season high 16 tackles, including 11 solo, and one and a half tackles for loss in a 20-17 loss to Utica.
Mitchell is the lone E8 student-athlete to earn D3football.com Team of the Week honors three times in 2022, while Copp is a two-time pick. Capone joins Alfred running back
