Empire 8 Captains Series: Arden Hatch, Alfred University

Arden Hatch will enter her fourth season as a member of the Alfred University softball team and first year as a captain in 2023. She helped lead Alfred to its second consecutive Empire 8 Championship in 2022, leading the team with nine wins on the mound, while striking out 128 batters in 109 2/3 innings, as opponents hit just .201 off of her. Hatch was named to the 2022 Empire 8 Championship All-Tournament Team and NCAA Union Regional All-Tournament Team. She was also the winning pitcher in the decisive game of the 2021 Empire 8 Championship.

A native of Orangevale, CA, Hatch is a biochemistry major and carries a 3.64 grade-point average. She is a three-time Empire 8 President's List selection for academic excellence and a member of Alfred's Honors Program. In addition, she is a two-time Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete and member of Chi Alpha Sigma Honors Society. Hatch is 18-11 with a 2.85 earned run average and 206 strikeouts in 199 career innings in her Alfred career.

When Did You Become a Captain?/How Long Have You Served in That Role?
I became captain at the beginning of this fall, and I have served for a semester now.
 
What Are Your Duties as Team Captain?
As captain, I help to organize events for our team, support my teammates with academic or personal help, hold people accountable and suggest ideas to our coaches on how to make our team better.
 
What Type of Leader Are You?
I like to lead by example, putting in extra work outside of practice to get better. I also push our team to dream bigger and set our goals higher each year.

What Qualities Do You Think A Team Leader Should Have?
I think a leader should be willing to put in the extra work, to dream bigger and make a concerted effort to connect with everyone on their team.
 
Any Interesting or Exciting Internships You Have Done or Are Currently Working On?
I am currently working on my thesis project, which is a site-directed mutagenesis of an enzyme, Acyl-CoA Dehydrogenase Family Member 11.

Plans After Graduation:
I plan on going to graduate school to obtain my PhD in Chemistry.

What Do You See Yourself Doing in 10-15 Years/What is Your Ultimate Professional Goal:
My ultimate goal is to work for a pharmaceutical company in the discovery and development of therapeutics.

How Has Playing Collegiately and in the Empire 8 Prepared You For Life After College:
Playing college softball has taught me immense patience and has instilled a belief in my abilities as a person, both on the field and off.

Favorite Athletic Memory from Your Time in College:
Storming the field after winning the Empire 8 Championship at St. John Fisher in 2021.

Greatest Mentors:
My greatest mentors have been my professors, specifically those who have pushed me to do research

What Have You Learned About Yourself from Being a Captain:
I have learned that being captain has pushed me to want even more from myself and to look within for motivation.

One Thing Most People Do Not Know About You:
Most people don’t know that I love to sew and embroider.
 
Advice for Younger Teammates/Student-Athletes and Future Captains:
My advice for younger student athletes is to first and foremost take care of yourself, because when you take time for yourself, it is easier to perform at your best, both in the classroom and on the field.
