Top-seeded Hartwick College (12-6) captured the 2022 Empire 8 Field Hockey Championship on Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 win over the visiting Houghton University (14-6) by a score of 4-0. The Hawks have now earned an automatic berth into the 2022 NCAA Division III National Tournament and will find out their opponent tonight during the selection show at 10:30 p.m. on ncaa.org.

The Hawks wasted little time getting on the board, posting a goal just over four minutes into the contest. Sydney Gagnon (Chestertown, N.Y.) set up the tally with a drive from the top of the circle.  The shot was stopped by the Highlanders' keeper, but Holly Calore (Rocky Point, N.Y.) picked up the rebound and slipped it to the waiting stick of Lex Matarazzo (Commack, N.Y.) for the score.

Hartwick struck again in the 23rd minute of play as Calore once again slipped a pass across the cage.  This time around, Gagnon was the beneficiary, notching the second goal of the game.  The tally also marked a milestone for the senior as she reached 100 career points.

After scoring one goal per quarter, the Hawks broke out for two in the third quarter. Leah Tolley (Pittsford, N.Y.), the eventual Championship Tournament MVP, ripped a drive from just inside the right side of the circle that tipped off the goalkeeper's pads and into the left corner of the cage to extend the Hawks lead to 3-0.

Gagnon added to her point total in the 38th minute with an assist to Faith Weaver (Clay, N.Y.) for the fourth and final goal of the game.

Madison Maddocks (Garrison, N.Y.) recorded the shutout victory without facing a shot thanks to the defensive back line of Emily Strutt (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.), Libby Fortin (State College, Pa.), and Kiara Dolan (Cazenovia, N.Y.).
