Two-time defending champion St. John Fisher is in the lead after day one of the 2022 Empire 8 Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship, held at the Todd and Jen Hutton Sports and Recreation Center, hosted by Utica University.
St. John Fisher has 87 team points and holds a nearly 30-point lead over second-place Nazareth, who has 58.5 points. Host Utica is third overall with 30 points, while Houghton is fourth with 27.5 points.
St. John Fisher’s Riley Corey won her third consecutive 5,000-meter run championship, cruising to a 36-second win in a time of 18:13.19.
Samantha Shea of St. John Fisher earned the victory in the 400-meters in a time of 58.21 seconds. The Cardinals’ distance medley relay team of Alivia Collins, Grace Wright, Angelea Collins and Taylor Highers earned the win in a time of 13:07.01.
Nazareth’s Brenna Johnson took the win in the long jump, with a leap of 5.66 meters. She was also third in the 400-meters. First-year Anna Ahlquist took the pole vault, clearing 3.67 meters.
Houghton’s Amanda Burrichter won her second straight league title in the mile, crossing the finish line first in 5:19.97.
Jane Fahy of Utica won her second consecutive E8 shot put title, with a toss of 12.97 meters.
