Eight Empire 8 Student-Athletes Earn 2022 USTFCCCA Women’s Indoor Track and Field All-Region Honors

Eight student-athletes from Nazareth College, St. John Fisher College and Utica University earned 2022 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Indoor Track and Field Women’s All-Niagara Region honors.
 
Brenna Johnson, Anna Ahlquist and Lea Richard earned All-Region honors from Nazareth, while St. John Fisher’s Riley Corey, Michaela Kurbs and Cierra Franz also earned the prestigious accolade. Jane Fahy and Mackenzie Mix represented Utica on the All-Region squad.
 
To earn All-Region honors, an athlete must be one of the top-5 individuals in their event in their respective region on the TFRRS Descending Order List. In addition, each member of a region’s top-3 relay team was selected for the distinction.
 
Johnson was the lone Empire 8 women’s student-athlete to earn All-Atlantic Region accolades in a pair of events, the 60-meter dash and long jump. She recorded the fifth best time in the region at 7.85 seconds in the 60-meters at the All-Atlantic Region Championships on her home turf last weekend. Johnson also recorded the second best leap regionally in the long jump at 5.66 meters in winning the Empire 8 Championship in the event last month. Johnson also earned All-Region accolades during the Spring 2021 outdoor season in the long jump.
 
Johnson also qualified for the NCAA Championships in the long jump and will compete on March 11 at 12:50 pm.
 
Ahlquist, a graduate student, set a Nazareth record in the pole vault and earned the fourth best mark in the region, clearing 3.67 meters in winning the 2022 Empire 8 Championship at Utica on Feb. 25-26.
 
Richard, a sophomore set a personal best in finishing second at the All-Atlantic Regional Championship on her home turf last weekend in the weight throw with a toss of 16.24 meters. She was also the 2022 Empire 8 Indoor Champion in the event.
 
Corey won her third straight Empire 8 Championship in the 5,000-meters last month. The junior recorded the fourth fastest time in the region, 18:07.14 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational held at Boston University on Feb. 11. Corey also earned All-Region accolades during the Spring 2021 outdoor season in the event.
 
Franz made a splash in her first season for the Cardinals, setting a school record and earning the third best time in the region in the 60-meter hurdles at nine seconds in last weekend’s All-Atlantic Region Championships held at Nazareth.
 
Kurbs, a sophomore, garnered her first All-Region honor with the fourth best long jump of 5.52 meters, taken at last weekend’s All-Atlantic Region Championships held at Nazareth.
 
Fahy recorded the second best shot put throw in the region of 13.08 meters, taken at the Hamilton Continental Invitational on Jan. 21. The junior won her second straight Empire 8 Indoor Championship in the shot put last month. Fahy also earned All-Region accolades during the Spring 2021 outdoor season in the event.
 
Mix, a freshman, earned All-Region honors in the 200-meter dash after winning the event at the 2022 Empire 8 Championships with a time of 25.81 seconds.
