WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Sophomore thrower Hunter Logan of the Utica University track and field team has been an All-American before at the NJCAA championship level. On Saturday, March 12th, he secured his first All-American honors at the NCAA championship level. Logan heaved his second-best mark of the season of 16.24 meters to place fifth in the men's shot put at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

With his fifth place performance, he becomes the program's second men's indoor shot put All-American, while also posting the second-highest national finish in that event by a Pioneer. School record holder Keanu Heedram placed third in the shot put at the 2019 championships in Boston. As the ninth seed, Logan out-threw his seeding by four places.

Logan opened competition by throwing in the second flight of the event. He opened with a mark of 13.66 meters to get a number on the sheet, then delivered marks of 15.57 and 15.93 meters to ascend into the top five overall in the preliminaries and make the finals. The top nine athletes qualified for the final, which included three more throws.

On his first of three finals attempts, Logan delivered the crucial throw that put him in fifth place. With his fourth overall attempt of the afternoon, he launched a 16.24 meter bullet down the middle of the throwing sector to ascend to third in the overall standings. He threw a 15.73 meter fifth attempt, before fouling on his sixth and final attempt. All the while, his fourth attempt stood tall as the fifth-best at the end of competition to secure his place on the podium.

Logan will look to continue his success into the outdoor season. The Pioneers open outdoor competition on Saturday, March 26th at St. Lawrence.
