Daniel Cook, Stephen Gabel and Thomas Morreale Earn 2021-22 All-Region Accolades

Empire 8 men’s basketball standouts Daniel Cook of St. John Fisher College, Stephen Gabel of Nazareth College and Thomas Morreale of Utica University earned 2021-22 All-Region/District honors on Tuesday, March 15. Cook earned All-NABC first team all-district honors and D3hoops.com All-Region second team accolades. Gabel was a D3hoops.com second team selection, while Morreale earned All-NABC second team plaudits.
 
Cook, who was named the Empire 8 Player of the Year for the second straight season last month, enjoyed another tremendous season for the Cardinals in 2021-22, finishing as the Empire 8 leader in scoring and rebounding, averaging 19.7 points and 10.3 boards to go along with 2.7 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.2 blocks per contest, while shooting 51.2 percent from the floor. Cook, a junior, scored in double figures in 25 of 26 games played this season and recorded 18 double-doubles. He poured in a career-high and St. John Fisher single-game record 47 points on Nov. 23. A native of Honeoye Falls, NY, Cook garnered D3hoops.com All-Region accolades for the second straight season and surpassed 1,000 career points.
 
Gabel, a fifth-year senior from Victor, NY, was the Golden Flyers' leading scorer in 2021-22 at 17.8 points per game (second in the league) and was an All-Empire 8 first team selection for the third year in a row. His career stat line includes 1,486 points -- good for ninth place on Nazareth's all-time list. He helped the Golden Flyers to a school-record 24 wins in 2021-22, an Empire 8 Conference title and the program's ninth NCAA Tournament selection. Gabel was also named the Empire 8 Championship Tournament Most Valuable Player.
 
Morreale, a native of Whitesboro, NY, garnered NABC All-District second team accolades after averaging 14.4 points and 5.9 boards per game, while shooting 57 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from 3-point range for a deep Pioneers squad that won the Empire 8 regular season title, going 15-1 in league play, while finishing 23-4 overall in 2021-22. Morreale, a junior, was the 2019-20 E8 Rookie of the Year and is a two-time All-Empire 8 first team selection. He has 780 career points in three seasons and is a career 54.6 shooter from the floor and has drained 48.1 percent of his attempts from 3-point range.
 
Players were nominated for the D3hoops.com awards by the Sports Information Directors. The ballot was then made available to SIDs, who voted for a predetermined number of players in their region. Players from these lists are eligible for the D3hoops.com All-America teams, which will be released Saturday, March 19. NABC All-District selections were voted on by NABC-member coaches across Division III.
