Melissa Kuberka, head coach of the St. John Fisher College women’s basketball team, was named the 2021-22 D3hoops.com Region 3 Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year on Tuesday, March 15.

Now in her fifth season at the helm, Kuberka guided the No. 20 Cardinals to new heights as Fisher went 26-3 overall and finished the season with a .897 winning percentage. St. John Fisher’s 26 wins were the most in a season since the 1994-95 campaign. The Cardinals rolled to a 15-1 mark in league play during the regular season en route to winning the 2021-22 Empire 8 Women’s Basketball Championship. St. John Fisher advanced to the second round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament. Last month, Kuberka and assistant coach Hannah Rehbaum were named the 2021-22 Empire 8 Co-Coaching Staff of the Year.

Kuberka molded Fisher into one of the top offensive and defensive teams in the region as the Cardinals led the Empire 8 in scoring (70.4), scoring defense (52.1), scoring margin (18.3), field goal percentage (.394), 3-point field goal percentage (.329), rebounding (47.9) and blocked shots per game (4.3).  With Kuberka on the bench, Fisher maintained a national ranking throughout the season and owned two winning streaks of at least 10 games, including a stretch of 17 straight victories.

Kuberka is 97-26 in five seasons at St. John Fisher, having led the Cardinals to the league championship game in all five seasons with a pair of Empire 8 Championships and two trips to the NCAA Tournament.
