Empire 8 Announces 2021-22 Women’s Indoor Track & Field Award Winners

The Empire 8 Conference announced its 2021-22 Women’s Indoor Track & Field All-Conference awards on Friday, March 18. The awards are voted on by the league's head coaches.
 
Houghton College junior Amanda Burrichter was named the 2021-22 Empire 8 Indoor Track Athlete of the Year. Last month, Burrichter earned 2022 Empire 8 Indoor Track Athlete of the Championship Meet honors after sweeping the mile and 3,000-meter run championships for the second straight season. Burrichter won the mile in a personal-best time of 5:19.97 and took the 3,000-meters in 10:28.15. In addition, Burrichter was part of Houghton’s distance medley relay team that placed second overall and recorded a personal best time of 10:23.19 in the 3,000-meters at Boston University. She is the first Houghton student-athlete to be named E8 Indoor Track Athlete of the Year.
 
Nazareth College senior Brenna Johnson was named the 2021-22 Empire 8 Indoor Field Athlete of the Year. Johnson earned All-American in honors in the long jump after placing fifth at the NCAA Champsionship on March 11 with a leap of 5.64 meters. Johnson also won the event at the Empire 8 Championship, junping 5.66 meters. She earned the Empire 8 Championship in the 60-meter dash in a meet record time of 7.86 seconds. Johnson, who was also named Rookie of the Year in 2018-19, is the third Nazareth student-athlete to garner E8 Field Athlete of the Year honors.
 
Ciarra Franz of St. John Fisher College was named the 2021-22 Empire 8 Indoor Rookie of the Year. Franz was a standout in the 60-meter hurdles, winning the Empire 8 Championship in the event, while placing third at the All-Atlantic Region Championships with a school record time of 9.00 seconds, which was also the 28th fastest time nationally in the event. Franz is the first Cardinal to earn E8 Indoor Rookie of the Year accolades.
 
St. John Fisher head coach Mike Henchen and his staff was named the 2021-22 Empire 8 Coaching Staff of the Year for the thirs straight season. The Cardinals won their third consecutive Empire 8 Championship, while 10 different Cardinals earned All-E8 first team accolades. St. John Fisher also finished seventh at the All-Atlantic Region Championships.
 
The Empire 8 first, second and third team all-conference selections were determined at the championship meet on Feb. 25-26 from the Todd and Jen Hutton Recreation Center, hosted by Utica University. Those selections were previously announced on March 8.
 
One member of each team was named that institution's representative on the 2021-22 Women's Indoor Track & Field Sportswoman of the Year Team. The Empire 8 Conference emphasizes that "Competing with Honor and Integrity" is an essential component of a student-athlete's experience in conjunction with an institution's educational mission. These honorees have distinguished themselves and consistently exhibit the critical traits as outstanding sportswomen.
