Nazareth College continues to maintain a slight lead in the 2021-22 Empire 8 Commissioner’s Cup standings, as the winter standings were announced on March 22. The Golden Flyers own a 0.9046 composite score, and lead by just over three tenths of a point following the winter season. The final Empire 8 Commissioner's Cup standings will be released in May after the completion of the spring sports campaign.
Nazareth and second place St. John Fisher have combined to win 13 league championships during the fall and winter seasons, including all six winter titles. For the complete E8 Commissioner's Cup standings, please see below.
The Golden Flyers earned 36 of a possible 40 points from their winter sports teams, with men’s and women’s swimming and diving, along with men’s basketball earning league titles, in addition to runner-up finishes in women’s basketball and both men’s and women’s indoor track and field. The Golden Flyers also earned team titles during the fall in men’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s soccer and women’s tennis. Nazareth has finished in the top half of the standings in all 13 of its sports to date in 2021-22.
St. John Fisher College is currently in second place, with a percentage total of 0.874 on the strength of women’s basketball and men’s and women’s indoor track and field titles during the winter season. In addition, Fisher won field hockey, women’s volleyball and women’s cross country titles in the fall. The Cardinals led all Empire 8 institutions during the winter season by recording a 0.9297 team score (29.75 of a possible 32 team points).
Utica University climbed to third overall with a percentage total of 0.557 after a runner-up finish in men’s basketball and third place finishes in both men’s and women’s indoor track and field. Alfred University is right behind Utica in fourth with a composite score of 0.538 on the strength of a runner-up finish in men’s swimming and diving, third place finish in women’s swimming and diving, while placing fourth in men’s basketball. Houghton College rounded out the top five with a percentage total of 0.475, as its men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams placed fourth this winter.
Hartwick College, Russell Sage College, Elmira College and Keuka College round out the 2021-22 Empire 8 Commissioner’s Cup standings after the winter season.
Commissioner’s Cup points are awarded based on each team's finish in the Empire 8 conference standings at the completion of the regular season and post-season. Points are awarded on a scale dependent upon the number of schools that sponsor the sport (affiliate members are not calculated into the point scale). A team's regular season finish will be added to its post-season finish and divided by two for the final total for that sport.
Teams tied for a position in the regular season standings are ranked based on tiebreaker scenarios. The actual number of points earned is then divided by the amount of possible points for each school based on conference-sponsored sports to determine their overall percentage.
