PITTSFORD NY – After etching his name in Division III history, Kyle Rollins of the St. John Fisher men's indoor track and field was named the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Athlete of the Week by the United States Track and Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on March 8 following a record-setting weekend.
During competition at the AARTFC Championships, Rollins set a new personal, facility, and meet record in the high jump, clearing a height of 2.20 meters (7' 2.5"). With the jump, Rollins claimed first place in the meet, and tied for third place in the all-time NCAA DIII record in the event.
The two-time national champion is now one of four men who topped 2.20 meters in the high jump in NCAA DIII history, with only 2.21 meters (7' 3") and 2.22 meters (7' 3.25") ahead of him.
After clearing 2.02 meters (6' 7.5") and 2.08 meters (6' 9.75"), Rollins managed to clear 2.13 meters (6' 11.75") on his second attempt. From there, Rollins moved the bar up to 2.18 meters (7' 1.75") and missed on his first two attempts. Instead of going for a third attempt, he insisted on moving the bar up to attempt a record-breaking jump, and with the crowd behind him, he cleared it on his first attempt.
Rollins, who was named the Empire 8 Field Athlete of the week on Monday, has now been named the National Athlete of the Week for the second time in his historic career, previously earning the honor on December 17, 2019.
