Nazareth College, St. John Fisher College, Elmira College and Utica University represent the Empire 8 Conference in the LEARFIELD Director’s Cup Standings, updated after the 2021-22 winter sports season. A total of 270 Division III institutions were represented this fall. Final standings will be announced after the spring sports season is concluded in mid-June.
The LEARFIELD Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and
USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships.
Nazareth is currently tied for 44th in Division III with 237.5 points. During the winter season, Nazareth received a total of 187.5 points combined (27th most nationally) from its men’s basketball and women’s ice hockey teams advancing to the NCAA Tournament in addition to All-American honors from Taylor Robey and Allie Norwood of women’s swimming and diving and Brenna Johnson of indoor track and field. During the fall season, both the men’s and women’s soccer team advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
St. John Fisher is 55th nationally after the winter season. The Cardinals scored 108 points during the winter, as Kyle Rollins won the NCAA Indoor Track and Field title in the long jump and earned All-American honors in the triple jump, while its women’s basketball team advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. St. John Fisher also had its women’s volleyball and field hockey teams compete in the 2021 NCAA Division III Championships as well as cross country standout Riley Corey compete at nationals.
Overall, St. John Fisher and Nazareth combined to win 13 league titles through the first two seasons in 2021-22. The Nazareth women’s tennis team won the 2021 Empire 8 Championship and will compete in the NCAA Championship Tournament in May, 2022.
Elmira is 103rd overall with 108 points on the strength of its women’s hockey team advancing to the NCAA National Semifinals and men’s hockey program earning a sport in the NCAA Tournament.
Utica is currently tied for 124th nationally with 86.5 points, as Hunter Logan of the men’s indoor track and field team earned All-American honors and its men’s hockey team advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
