She also stole six bases on the season and was second in the league with an .819 slugging percentage. Papas is the first Russell Sage student-athlete to earn Empire 8 Player of the Year accolades.
Daciw became the second Nazareth player in program history to earn Pitcher of the Year honors. She struck out a league-high 160 batters in just 124 2/3 innings, finishing 10-9 with a 3.26 earned run average, 15 complete games, two shutouts and one save. Daciw struck out at least 10 batters in a game seven times this season, including a career-high 17 at Keuka on April 2.
Neto is having an excellent debut season for Alfred, the 2022 Empire 8 Champions, batting .376 with a 1.098 OPS to go along with 14 extra base hits, including three home runs and 24 runs batted in. She has also walked 14 times and has been hit by pitch a league-high 10 times. Neto, an outfielder, has reached base in 30 games this season. Neto is the second straight Saxon to earn E8 Rookie of the Year honors, joining teammate Mya Wells, who was honored in 2021.
Muise and his staff of assistant coaches Olivia Scarbrough, Brianna Carpenter and Hannah Bailey led Houghton to its finest season in program history as they reached the 20-win plateau for the first time and were in contention for an Empire 8 postseason berth until the final weekend of the regular season.
In year of unprecedented parity, six different teams had at least one first team selection. St. John Fisher led all institutions with four first team selections, while Utica, Houghton, Russell Sage and Nazareth each had two selections and Alfred had one. Overall, the Cardinals had 10 all-conference selections and six from Empire 8 Champion Alfred were honored. Nazareth’s Sarah Simmons became a three-time All-Empire 8 first team selection, while Alfred’s Ashley Lugo, Taylor Dicranian and Papas from Russell Sage and Utica’s Kaitlyn Paul became two-time all-conference first team picks.
One member of each team was named that institution's representative on the 2022 Empire 8 Softball Sportswoman of the Year Team. The Empire 8 Conference emphasizes that "Competing with Honor and Integrity" is an essential component of a student-athlete's experience in conjunction with an institution's educational mission. These honorees have distinguished themselves and consistently exhibit the critical traits as outstanding sportswomen.
