Megan Bennett of the Alfred University softball team captured the final Division III Wilson/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Pitcher of the Week honor of the 2022 season on Tuesday, May 10.
Bennett was named the 2022 Empire 8 Softball Championship Tournament Most Valuable Player after earning two wins and a save on the mound for the Saxons, while not surrendering a run in 10 innings of action. She picked up the win in relief, striking out four batters in two innings in Alfred’s E8 Tournament opener, a 4-3 win over Nazareth Thursday. On Friday, Bennett struck out three batters in two hitless innings of relief to earn the save in a win over St. John Fisher. In Saturday afternoon’s winner-take-all championship against St. John Fisher, Bennett scattered five hits and struck out seven batters to earn the shutout over six innings in a 9-0 win.
On Monday, Bennett was named the Empire 8 Softball Player of the Week. She is now 7-5 on the season with an Empire 8 single-season record and NCAA Division III leading eight saves. Bennett's earned run average now stands at 2.36 on the season, while she has struck out 103 batters in 83 innings pitched.
Alfred will travel to Union, NJ for the Regional Championship round of the NCAA Division III Softball National Tournament hosted by Kean University on Friday, May 13. The Saxons (25-14, 11-3 E8) will take on the hosts Cougars (30-8, 15-3 NJAC) on Friday at 2 p.m. to begin the double-elimination regional.
