UNION, NJ – The Alfred University softball team won its first NCAA Division III Regional game of the 2022 season on Saturday afternoon, topping No. 4 seeded Waynesburg University, 6-1 from Cougar Field at Kean University.

The Saxons (26-15) scored first in the top of the second inning and never relinquished the lead as the Yellow Jackets (27-11) scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Allison O'Toole (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley) drove in the game-winning run in the second as she singled down the right field line to send Tatiana Mejia (North Hills, CA/John F. Kennedy) across home plate followed closely by Isabella Carrillo (Van Nuys, CA/Birmingham Community Charter) for what would go on to be the game-winning score.

O'Toole totaled four RBI in the outing with a 2-for-3 performance from the batters' box. Carrillo scored twice for AU as she was 1-for-3 with a walk. The pitching combination of Arden Hatch (Orangevale, CA/St. Francis) and Megan Bennett (Athens, PA/Athens Area) worked in tandem to only allow three hits from three different Yellow Jacket players in the win. Hatch earned the win with nine strikeouts in 6.0 innings.

The Yellow Jackets cut the 2-0 lead in half in the bottom of the fourth with a run scoring off a sacrificed fly and the score sat as 2-1 for the remainder of regulation until the top of the seventh inning.

O'Toole doubled down the left field line, sending Carrillo and Alyssa Guitron (San Bernardino, CA/Cajon) home for the 4-1 advantage. With bases-loaded, Meghan Neto (Miami, FL/Doral Academy Charter) walked to nudge Gillian Flint (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) home, making it a 5-1 advantage for AU. Mejia was walked right after to send Ashley Lugo (Hesperia, CA/Oak Hills) home for the final run of the game and the 6-1 win.

The Saxons were scheduled to play No. 1 seeded Eastern Connecticut State University at 4:30pm after their win over Waynesburg but due to inclement weather, the game was first pushed back to 5:30pm and then again, until 10:00am on Sunday, May 15.
