Below are the Empire 8 Players of the Week, released on May 16, 2022, for games played from May 9-May 15. It is the 35th Empire 8 weekly honors release of the 2021-22 season. Sports featured include baseball and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field.

BASEBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Michael Beimel, St. John Fisher, Gr., C, St. Mary’s PA/St. Mary’s
Beimel was named the 2022 Empire 8 Baseball Championship Most Valuable Player after leading the Cardinals to their second straight league title on Friday. Beimel batted .500 (5-for-10) with four RBI and three runs scored, while catching all 18 innings, as the Cardinals swept the best-of-three championship series over Utica from Dugan Yard by scores of 14-3 and 9-2. Beimel saved his best for last in game two, going 4-for-5 with a double, run scored and four RBI. Defensively, Beimel had a picked off a base runner in the opener and had eight putouts.    
 
MEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – John Ruggio, St. John Fisher, So., Hurdles, Oswego, NY/Hannibal
Ruggio ran a personal record of 55.93 seconds to win the 400-meter hurdles at Nazareth's ROC City Final Qualifier on Sunday. Ruggio also placed sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.94 seconds.
 
FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Josh Pomerleau, Nazareth, Sr., Pole Vault, Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder
Pomerleau broke the school record in the pole vault, clearing 4.55 meters (14' 11") and placed fourth at the Roc City Final Qualifier meet at Nazareth on Sunday.
 
WOMEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Laura Meade, Utica, Sr., Sprints, Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville
Meade set a new school record in the 400 hurdles at Sunday's ROC City Final Qualifier hosted by Nazareth College. She placed third with a time of 1:05.04 to rank just outside the top-50 nationally. Meade is in her first collegiate season competing in this event. It is Meade’s second E8 weekly honor of the 2022 outdoor season.
 
FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Jordan Lehman, St. John Fisher, Gr., Throws, Port Leyden, NY/South Lewis
Lehman turned in her second-best performance of the season in the hammer throw at 48.03 meters to take first place at the ROC City Final Qualifier from Nazareth on Sunday afternoon. It was her first win in the event since the 2021 E8 Outdoor Championship. Lehman’s mark also qualified her for the Atlantic Regional Championship.
