St. John Fisher College, Nazareth College, Utica University, Elmira College and Alfred University represented the Empire 8 Conference in the final 2021-22 LEARFIELD Director’s Cup Standings. A total of 327 Division III institutions were represented throughout the year.
The LEARFIELD Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and
USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships.
St. John Fisher, the 2021-22 Empire 8 Commissioner’s Cup Champions, used a strong spring season to place 41st nationally with 427 points. The Cardinals scored 239 points during the spring, as Kyle Rollins won the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field title in the long jump and earned All-American honors in the triple jump, while its men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s golf, baseball and men’s volleyball teams won league titles and competed in the NCAA Tournament.
St. John Fisher also had its women’s basketball team compete in 2021-22 NCAA Division III Championships and Rollins claimed the long jump title at indoor nationals during the winter. Last fall, women’s volleyball and field hockey teams competed in the 2021 NCAA Division III Championships, while cross country standout Riley Corey competed at nationals.
Nazareth finished tied for 60th in Division III with 287.5 points. During the winter season, Nazareth received a total of 187.5 points combined (27th most nationally) from its men’s basketball and women’s ice hockey teams advancing to the NCAA Tournament in addition to All-American honors from Taylor Robey and Allie Norwood of women’s swimming and diving and Brenna Johnson of indoor track and field. During the fall season, both the men’s and women’s soccer team advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The Golden Flyers added 50 more points in the spring, as both the men’s and women’s tennis won E8 titles and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Overall, St. John Fisher and Nazareth combined to win 19 league titles during the 2021-22 season.
Utica placed 153rd nationally with 118.5 points, as Hunter Logan earned All-American honors in the shot put at both the 2022 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Track ans Field Championships and its men’s hockey team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
Elmira finished tied 160th overall with 108 points on the strength of its women’s hockey team advancing to the NCAA National Semifinals and men’s hockey program earning a sport in the NCAA Tournament.
Alfred recorded 37.5 points in 2021-22 on the strength of its second consecutive Empire 8 softball championship and automatic berth into the 2022 NCAA Division III Softball Championship Tournament.
