The Wahington & Jefferson Department of Athletics has announced that Maggie Fees will serve as the interim head coach for the 2022 field hockey season. Fees will guide the Presidents following the departure of longtime head coach Jomara Coghlan, who resigned as the head field hockey coach to pursue other coaching opportunities.
Coghlan compiled 168 wins and earned Empire 8 Coach of the Year honors for times during her W&J tenure. She led W&J to three Empire 8 Tournament titles and three NCAA Tournament appearances during her 15 years with the program.
"We thank Coach Coghlan for her contributions in turning W&J into a championship caliber program and we wish her good luck. At the same time, we couldn't be more excited to have Maggie Fees to turn to as head coach for the 2022 season," said Scott McGuinness, Director of Athletics at W&J. "In her short time here, Coach Fees has brought energy and enthusiasm to our program. She displays a positive outlook every day and we anticipate her leadership as head coach will benefit our field hockey student-athletes."
Fees joined the W&J field hockey program in August 2021 and has served as its Intern Assistant Coach. The Red and Black recorded a 5-8 overall record in 2021. Four student-athletes were named All-Empire 8 following the season."
Fees participated in the 2022 NCAA Emerging Leaders Seminar (ELS), which is a three-day professional development event provides leadership, educational and transitional programming for current graduate assistants and interns from NCAA member schools, conference offices and affiliate organizations. The three-day virtual program educates, develops and connects selected participants and equips attending young professionals with the skills necessary to accelerate their career progression in college sports.
Fees played four years of collegiate field hockey, splitting her time at Division II West Chester University before competing for Division III Elizabethtown College during her final two seasons. During her time with West Chester, the Rams advanced to the NCAA Division II Final Four in 2015. She was also named to the NFHCA All-Academic Team. After transferring to Elizabethtown, she played a key role for the Blue Jays in 2017 and 2018. She started all 34 games and anchored the defensive unit during her time with the Blue Jays.
Fees earned All-Landmark Conference First Team honors as a senior. She was twice named Landmark Conference Offensive Athlete of the Week in 2018 when she led the team in points (17), assists (5) and shots (68). She ranked second on the team with six goals and anchored the league's top defensive unit. Additionally, she was named to the NFHCA Division III National Academic Team.
She earned her bachelor's degree in Business Administration with concentrations in Entrepreneurship and Family Business from Elizabethtown in 2019. She was a Presidential Scholar and involved with the Entrepreneurship Club at E-Town.
A native of Orrtanna, Pa., she attended Gettysburg High School. As a senior, she was GameTimePA First Team All Star and Gettysburg Times Player of the Year.
