WASHINGTON, PA -- Powered by a strong offensive effort, the Washington & Jefferson field hockey team rolled to a 5-0 victory over Elmira Saturday in the Empire 8 Conference opener for both teams.
W&J scored early and often as they picked up their first win of 2022. Junior forward Hailey Wachowiak (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) scored just 1:07 into the match after taking a pass from senior midfielder Lina Crowley (Potomac, Md./The Bullis School) off a corner insert. The Presidents tacked on its second goal of the day when freshman forward Lily Giering (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) connected on a strike from 10 yards out. The Giering goal gave W&J a 2-0 lead after the first quarter of play.
The Presidents tacked on two additional goals in the second quarter, allowing the Red and Black to double its lead by halftime. In the 18th minute, Giering tapped the ball into the goal after a shot attempt from Wachowiak. The Giering goal was her second of the day and fourth of the season.
Just a few minutes later, it was Camryn Cresci (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. DuPont) tapping the ball into the left corner of the cage to stretch the lead to 4-0. The unassisted score by Cresci allowed the Presidents to take a 4-0 lead into halftime. W&J closed the scoring with an unassisted third quarter goal by Wachowiak in the 40th munute.
W&J held sizable advantages in shots (33-1), shots on goal (20-0) and penalty corners (16-2). The win was the first for interim head coach
Maggie Fees.
The Presidents (1-0 E8, 1-3 overall) travel to Buffalo, N.Y. to face Medaille College in an E8 match on Tuesday, Sept. 13. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
