ELMIRA, NY -- Martin Harguindey '25 scored his first collegiate hat trick to lead the Soaring Eagles to a 3-0 win over visiting Keystone College on Saturday Afternoon. The Purple & Gold possessed the ball well throughout the game, rarely giving the Giants any opportunity for a clear shot on goal. It was the second clean sheet in a row for Elmira and their third overall on the season through four games played.
JUST THE BASICS:
SCORE: Elmira 0, Keystone 3
LOCATION: Elmira, NY
TEAM RECORDS: Elmira (3-0-1, 0-0 E8), Keystone (1-3, 0-0 CSAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Harguindey got EC on the board ten minutes into play with the help of teammate Gavin Wise '22. After a poor pass by the Keystone defense, Wise won possession just outside of the penalty area and picked out Harguindey with a nice lifted pass over the Giants' back line. Harguindey was just able to reach the ball before the Keystone goalkeeper and poked it past him with his right foot and into goal, putting the Soaring Eagles ahead 1-0.
Harguindey's second score came just 11 minutes later in the 21st minute of play. The freshman forward found himself one on one with a Keystone defender just inside the top of the 18-yard box. He faked to the left and the defender took the bait before having to turn completely around to try and relocate Harguindey. The Argentinian then cut back to the right where another Keystone defender had tracked back to try and help, Harguindey would spin him around as well with another fake before tucking the ball away into the right side of goal.
He would complete the hat trick after halftime, when he earned himself a penalty kick in the first seven minutes of play. A turnover by the Giants led to a Purple & Gold counter attack that saw senior Lutho Mlunguza '23 make a through pass to Harguindey down the right side of the penalty area. A Keystone defender would take out Harguindey in the box, forcing him to step to the penalty spot for a chance at his third goal of the day. He calmly put the ball past the keeper with his left foot to earn the hat trick and make it 3-0 Elmira.
