Morrisville moves to 3-0 for first tme as NCAA program after 17-15 win at St. Lawrence

CANTON, NY – The SUNY Morrisville football team added another win to their young season Friday night as they topped host St. Lawrence University by a 17-15  final score in Canton.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • SUNY Morrisville football is off to a program best start 3-0 in it's history as a member of the NCAA, under direction of head coach Ed Raby, Jr., topping host St. Lawrence University 17-15 Friday night in Canton in the non-conference battle.
  • The Mustangs claimed their first win against the Saints on the road, pulling the series even at four wins apiece, while St. Lawrence dropped to 1-2 on the season with the loss.
  • In an evenly matched contest, Morrisville collected 292 yards total offense to the Saints 293, with a season high 178 yards coming in the passing game.
  • Junior signal caller Steven Frerichs (Wilson, N.Y.) completed 14-of-20 passes for 178 yards, while adding a team high 55 yards on the ground in the running game with two touchdown scores.
  • Morrisville collected a total 114 net yards rushing, with 52 coming off the quick foot of Alex McBurnie (Brooklyn, N.Y.).
  • Tight end Quamel Jarvis (Rochester, N.Y.) caught a team high five for 81 yards receiving, a long of 31, while fellow wide receiver Connor Marriott (Waterville, N.Y.) added 38 yards on two receptions.
  • The senior linebacker duo of Ernesto Mitchell (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) and Joe Miller-LaBar (Groton, N.Y.) combined for 25 total stops, two for a loss of two yards, to limit the Saints offensive unit.
  • Anai Brake (Carteret, N.J.) added eight total tackles in the win.
  • Frerichs also registered two punts for 83 total yards, a 41.5 yard per kick average, placing one inside the 20 and another touchback.
  • St. Lawrence collected 118 yards on the ground, scoring twice, including a three-yard run at 6:21 in the second to put the first score on the board.
  • Morrisville responded on the ensuing drive, with a rushing score of their own, a one-yard quarterback keep up center to complete the 12-play, 80-yard drive for the touchdown.
  • Owen Cole (Maspeth, N.Y.) completed the point after for the 7-6 lead for the visitors with 51 seconds left before the half.
  • St. Lawrence headed into the locker room with momentum, hitting the 24-yard field goal with no time remaining on the clock for a 9-7 halftime advantage.
  • Morrisville regained the lead on their first drive of the third as Cole sent the 20-yard field goal through the uprights for the 10-9 Mustang lead.
  • That advantage carried over into the final frame, where Frerichs added to Morrisville's lead with another quarterback keep up center, followed by a Cole point after with 8:32 to go in the contest.
  • St. Lawrence cut the lead to two with 4:15 to go with a two-yard rushing score from Daniel Lawther and opted to go for two in an effort to tie the contest at 17.
  • Lawther finished with 175 yards passing on 17-of-22 pass attempts, adding 27 net yards on the ground.
  • After a false start penalty to push the Saints back five, the Lawther pass attempt to the back left corner failed and Morrisville remained in the lead 17-15.
  • Morrisville ate away at the clock in the final 3:03 of the contest, capturing their third straight win of the season.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
 
  • Morrisville returns to the field next Saturday, traveling to Buffalo State for the final non-conference matchup before meeting last year's Empire 8 champion Cortland on October 1.
