Alfred Picks Up First Conference Win of Season Over Utica

UTICA, NY – The Alfred University women's tennis team picked up a 9-0 win over Utica University on Saturday afternoon, resulting in their first Empire 8 conference victory of the season.
 
With the win, the Saxons (6-0, 1-0 Empire 8) have won each of their first six matches to start the season for just the third time in program history.
 
"The team is excited to be off to such a great start," Head Coach Jordan Crouch said. "It was an awesome atmosphere today, especially in singles. It was a great team win up and down the ladder."
 
Macy Youngberg (Falconer, NY/Falconer Central) and Alina Zabihailo (Kyiv, Ukraine/Educational Complex #143) picked up the first point of the afternoon from the top spot in doubles action for AU, winning 8-5. Anna Gwozdz (South Wales, NY/South Wales) and Eve Liu (Yantai, China/Wilbraham and Monson Academy) won a contested matchup from No. 2 doubles by an 8-6 score. Abigail Call (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) and Alexis Giordano (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) rounded out doubles play with an 8-4 victory.
 
In singles, Youngberg did not allow a single point from No. 4 during her 6-0, 6-0 victory. Zabihailo represented the Saxons from No. 1 singles, winning 6-2, 6-4 to seal the victory. Alfred University continued to play well throughout the afternoon, as Call, Giordano, Liu, and Gwozdz all picked up singles wins.

Alfred University will next travel to face SUNY Cortland for their final non-conference matchup of the season on Thursday with matches scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
