The Empire 8 Conference is pleased to announce the addition of Hilbert College as an affiliate member in the sport of football effective with the 2024-25 academic year.
"We are excited to welcome Hilbert to the Empire 8 Football family,” said Empire 8 Commissioner
Chuck Mitrano. “Their profile, location and leadership with President Brophy, Tim Seil and Jim Kubiak make them an excellent addition. They are ambitious and we're excited to play a role in their growth and history.”
Hilbert College, located in Hamburg, N.Y., is a 4-year private Franciscan College founded in 1957 as a two-year teaching college. In 1993, the college began offering four-year degree programs and became an NCAA Division III member. Currently, Hilbert offers associate, bachelors, and masters degrees to individuals looking to amplify the good in the world. Students from diverse backgrounds are educated in liberal arts and professional programs (in person or through online at Hilbert Global) to become informed citizens committed to serving and strengthening their communities.
“We are very excited about the opportunity to compete in the Empire 8 in 2024,” said Hilbert Head Football Coach
Jim Kubiak. “Without question it is highly competitive and full of well-established football programs. We are looking forward to our partnership as well as the chance to grow and develop within this strong conference.”
Hilbert currently sponsors 18 Division III sports, the majority competing in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. Football is playing in its inaugural season in 2022 as an independent. Hilbert will become the eighth Empire 8 football program in 2024, joining full-time members Alfred University, Hartwick College, St. John Fisher University and Utica University, in addition to fellow affiliate members SUNY Brockport, SUNY Cortland and SUNY Morrisville.
Hilbert has enjoyed a rich athletics history with tremendous success at the conference and national level, including:
- 7 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships
- 2 NCAA Tournament Teams
- 77 First Team All-Conference players, 3 All-Americans and 4 Academic All-Americans, 7 AMCC FAR Awards
- 10 Conference Coaches of the Year, 10 Players of the Year and 13 Newcomers of the Year
“This is an exciting time for Hilbert College and our Football program,” said Hilbert College Athletic Director
Tim Seil. “I'd like to thank the Empire 8 Presidents Council, Football Athletic Directors, and Commissioner Chuck Mitrano for providing us with this great opportunity. We are honored to join the other seven institutions that make up the football conference and look forward to a great partnership.”
Founded in 1998, the Empire 8 has developed into one of the premier NCAA Division III athletic conferences, both on the field and in the classroom. The conference consists of full-time members Alfred University, Elmira College, Hartwick College, Houghton College, Keuka College, Medaille College, Nazareth College, Russell Sage College, St. John Fisher College, and Utica College.
“Our community is grateful for this opportunity and our team plans to be a positive contributor to Empire 8 football,” said Hilbert College President
Dr. Michael Brophy.
