ROCHESTER, NY – Senior Kaylee Kelly had nine kills, sophomore Tessa Grover handed out 11 assists and fellow sophomore Zoe Tylipakis served six aces to lead the Nazareth Women's Volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Keuka Friday in the first Empire 8 match of the season.
Nazareth (4-8 overall, 1-0 Empire 8) won by set scores of 25-20, 25-14 and 25-17.
Keuka (2-9 overall, 0-1 Empire 8) held a 19-15 lead in the opening set but Nazareth used a timeout and regrouped for a 5-1 run to knot the score at 20-20 and force Keuka to use one of its timeouts. The Golden Flyers continued the rally with three more points before a second timeout by Keuka at 23-20.
Senior Eva Lyko recorded a kill and then Grover and Lyko combined for a block to record the winning point. Nazareth finished the set with a 10-1 run.
In the second set, Nazareth jumped out to a 7-3 lead and continued the momentum with a 14-8 lead midway through the set. At 22-14, Nazareth used a kill by freshman Rylie Loomis and a Grover ace to reach set point. Another block with junior Catie Spegar and Ryleigh Bidwell combining for the stop sealed the win.
Keuka had an early 4-0 lead in the third set but Nazareth rallied for a 7-0 run to take a lead. A pair of kills by Kelly and an ace by Tylipakis pushed the lead to 10-6. Near the end of the set, Kelly added a kill and sophomore Ella Kules recorded an ace before a pair of attack errors by Keuka ended the match.
Prior to the match, Head Coach Cal Wickens was presented a commemorative game ball for his 400th career victory from over the weekend on the road. The 400th win was the 3-2 victory over Lasell Saturday at the RIT Invitational.
Nazareth continues Empire 8 play Saturday at Utica and will return home Wednesday, September 28 to face Oswego in a non-conference match.
