ALFRED, NY – A defensive stand for the Alfred University men's soccer team resulted in a 2-0 win over St. John Fisher University on Saturday night from Yunevich Stadium.

The Saxons (3-4-1, 1-1 Empire 8) defense allowed just one shot on goal, while the Cardinals (2-4-1, 1-1 Empire) were limited to just four corner kick opportunities.

Christian Moon (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) finished with one goal across a team-high four shots. Sai Baraka (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) scored once from his lone shot. William Moore (Stormville, NY/John Jay) was credited with an assist.

"Playing in front of Saxon Nation is an experience that is second to none," Assistant Coach Andrew Barnikel said. "With the result against a historic rival like Fisher on homecoming, it's even more special. The team was given a game plan and followed it to the letter and we are extremely proud of their effort."

The Saxons set the tone early in the opening half, putting across two shots before a pass from Moore to Moon found the back of the net for the early 1-0 advantage. The Cardinals attempted two more shots in which AU defended successfully, as they led going into halftime.

In the second half, a corner kick by Chase Freeland (Hornell, NY/Hornell) bounced around before finding its way to Baraka, who hit the left side of the goal to extend the lead. St. John Fisher was able to attempt six more shots before the final horn, as the Saxons held on for the win.

"We will enjoy this victory with a well-earned day off and then get right back at it to fix some things before a tough Medaille test next Saturday," Barnikel said.

Alfred University will next travel to face Medaille University next Saturday with the match slated to begin at 1:00 PM.
