Nazareth Sweeps Past Utica for 9-0 Win in E8 Opener

UTICA, NY – Junior Aliya Guzman and sophomore Claire Pullen combined for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles to open the match and the Nazareth Women's Tennis team went on to post a 9-0 victory over Utica University Saturday. The win was the 21st straight win over the Pioneers in women's tennis.

Nazareth (2-0 overall, 1-0 Empire 8) won its second 9-0 decision of the year and won a regular-season Empire 8 match for the 15th consecutive time in a streak that dates back to 2019.

After Guzman and Pullen won at No. 1 doubles, freshman Catherine Zak and sophomore Lily Bulkeley scored an 8-0 win at No. 2 and the team of freshman Scarlett Wagner and senior Theresa Hecht won an 8-1 decision at No. 3.

In singles play, Pullen (No.3), Wagner (No. 4) and Bulkeley (No. 5) all posted 6-0, 6-0 wins. Guzman won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 while Zak posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 and junior Katelyn Spath won a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No 6.

Nazareth returns home to face Alfred at 1 p.m. Sunday. The match is scheduled for Annette Shapiro Courts but if weather causes a change in venue, the match will be played in the Golisano Training Center.
