Sophomore quarterback
Zac Boyes of the SUNY Cortland football team was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
Boyes completed 22-of-30 passes for a school record 543 yards and four touchdowns in his first start as a Red Dragon, as thy rolled to a 48-28 win over Wiitenberg University in the season opener Saturday. The team's backup quarterback most of last fall, Boyes broke the previous school mark of 487 yards set by John Grassi at Buffalo State in 2014.

JJ Laap (Stony Brook/Ward Melville), who finished the day with nine catches of his own for an Empire 8 and Cortland single-game record 312 yards receiving. Boyes threw a 3-yard TD pass to
Rashad Tucker (Freeport) in the second quarter and an 80-yard TD to
Jaden Alfanostjohn (Westhampton/Westhampton Beach) for Cortland's final score in the fourth quarter. On that play, Boyes avoided a sack before tossing a short pass to Alfanostjohn, who broke free down the left sideline and avoided tackles beyond midfield before racing to the end zone.
Cortland set a school record with 681 yards of total offense in the win.
Boyes, a native of Buffalo, NY, finished just 36 yards shy of the Empire 8 single-game record for yards passing in a game.
Empire 8 teams went 6-1 during the opening week of the season.
Cortland will host The College of New Jersey in a non-league game on Saturday at noon. Five of the seven Empire 8 programs are home on Saturday.
