BUFFALO, NY – Medaille University has announced the appointment of Laura Edholm as Athletic Director. Edholm was previously the Senior Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator at Medaille.
Edholm will take over the Medaille athletics program that includes 19 varsity sports. She will oversee the development and execution of a long-term strategic vision for Medaille athletics, while also managing day-to-day operations, serving as an advocate for the needs of student-athletes, coaches, and staff.
In addition to her administrative duties, Edholm has also coached four separate Medaille teams. She started in 1997 as an Assistant Coach for the Mavericks women's volleyball team, she then took over the team two years later. She coached the team for seven seasons. In 2012, she took over the softball team, and coached them for five seasons. In 2015, Edholm took over the bowling program and led the Mavs to unprecedented success. She led them to four AMCC Regular Season Championships, then brought them to the NCAA Tournament in the AMCC's first automatic bid. Finally, in 2021, Edholm became the Head Golf Coach, where she continues into the 2022-23 season.
With all of her experience as a coach at Medaille, Edholm is in a unique position.
"I understand the highs and lows of coaching – from competing in the NCAA Tournament, to the late night bus rides. As a coach you learn so much about your players- their hopes, dreams, challenges, stresses," said Edholm. "I hope to use my experience to support our student-athletes, coaches and staff to become the best version of themselves; whatever that is for each individual."
Stepping into her new role in the 2022-23 school year, Edholm sees this as an exciting time for Medaille Athletics.
"There is so much excitement in the department right now for us to build on," stated Edholm. "Our first year as Medaille University, starting our tenure in the Empire 8, as well as utilizing the beautiful new sports complex, the entire athletic department is engaged and looking forward to the opportunities ahead."
As the new Athletic Director, has her own vision for the department moving forward.
"My vision for the department is to create an environment where out student-athletes are proud to put on a Medaille uniform and play for championships with a sense of pride," said Edholm. "I hope to engage the alumni and make sure they appreciate what a key role they played and continue to play in our success."
With the new academic year just beginning, Edholm is ready to get started, and shared what she's looking forward to.
"I'm looking forward to working with our staff to provide quality experiences while developing out student-athletes both on and off the field of play."
