St. John Fisher College will look to earn its fourth straight Empire 8 Championship, as the 2022-23 women’s indoor track and field season kicks into high gear this month as the second semester gets underway. The Empire 8 Championship will take place at Nazareth College on Friday, Feb. 24 and Saturday, Feb. 25. Below are two athletes to watch from each institution.
Athletes to Watch (Sorted by Institution)
Liv Gilbert, Alfred, Jr., Middle Distance, Ontario, NY/Wayne Central – Gilbert will look to earn All-Empire 8 honors in the 800-meters in 2023 after finishing sixth in that event at both the 2022 Empire 8 Indoor and Outdoor Championships.
Madison Palmer, Alfred, Sr., Throws, East Aurora, NY/East Aurora – Palmer is one of the top throwers in the league, as she won the 2021 Empire 8 Outdoor shot put title and was runner-up at the 2020 E8 Indoor Championship in both the shot put and weight throw and 2022 Outdoor Championship in the shot put.
Ashley Tricario, Hartwick, So., Sprints, Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay – Tricario will look to lead Hartwick in the 60-, 100- and 200-meter sprint events during the 2023 season.
Giovanna Wall, Hartwick, So., Multi-Events, West Hurley, NY/Onteora – Wall is an emerging contender for the indoor pentathlon and outdoor heptathlon in 2023. She recorded a top score of 2,630 in the heptathlon last spring.
Amanda Burrichter, Houghton, Sr., Distance, Houghton, NY/Fillmore – Burrichter is the two-time defending Empire 8 Indoor Champion in both the mile and 3,000-meters. She was also named the 2021-22 E8 Indoor Championship Track Athlete of the Meet. Burrichter also won the 1,500 meters at the 2021 E8 Outdoor Championship and was the 2022 E8 Cross Country Champion and Runner of the Year.
Hayden Williamson, Houghton, Sr., Jumps/Hurdles, Battle Ground, WA/Battle Ground – Williamson was the 2021 Empire 8 Indoor and Outdoor Champion in the high jump and earned runner-up honors in the event at both the 2022 E8 Indoor and Outdoor Championships.
Brenna Johnson, Nazareth, Gr., Sprints/Jumps, Cortland, NY/Homer – Johnson is a two-time Empire 8 Indoor Track Athlete of the Year and 2019 Empire 8 Rookie of the Year. She earned All-American honors in the long jump at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. She is the two-time defending E8 Champion in the 60-meters and overall is a 12-time Empire 8 Champion.
Lea Richard, Nazareth, Jr., Throws, Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls – Richard is a two-time Empire 8 Indoor Track and Field Champion in the weight throw and was the 2022 E8 Outdoor Track and Field Champion in the hammer throw. In addition, Richard is Nazareth's record holder in the indoor weight throw (16.24 meters) and outdoor hammer throw (45.95 meters).
Mackenzie Feeney, Russell Sage, So., Distance, Saugerties, NY/Saugerties – Feeney placed third in the 800-meters at the 2022 E8 Outdoor Championships and was the Spring 2021 Empire 8 Cross Country Rookie of the Year. She was part of the distance medley relay team that was second in at the 2021 E8 Indoor Championships.
Elizabeth Ingellis, Russell Sage, So., Distance, Kingston, NY/Kingston – Ingellis is expected to be a top distance runner in both the indoor and outdoor seasons after an impressive seventh place finish at the 2022 E8 Cross Country Championships, earning her All-E8 first team accolades.
Michaela Kurbs, St. John Fisher, Jr., Jumps, Lockport, NY/Lockport – Kurbs was runner-up in the long jump at the 2022 Empire 8 Outdoor Championships and third in the event at the 2022 Indoor Championships. She was also part of the winning 4 x 100-meter relay team at the 2022 Outdoor Championships and represented St. John Fisher in the long jump at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Samantha Shea, St. John Fisher, Sr., Sprints, North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint – Shea led St. John Fisher to victories in the 4 x 100-meters at the 2022 E8 Outdoor Championships and 4 x 400-meter relay events at both the 2022 E8 Indoor and Outdoor Championships. She was also the indoor individual champion in the 400-meters and runner-up in the 200-meters.
Jane Fahy, Utica, Throws, Sr., Oriskany, NY/Oriskany – Fahy is the two-time defending Empire 8 Indoor Champion in the shot put, while winning the same event at the 2022 E8 Outdoor Championships and earning All-E8 second team honors at the 2021 Outdoor Championships. She was also runner-up in the outdoor discus throw.
Mackenzie Mix, Utica, So., Sprints, Camden, NY/Camden – Mix qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 400-meters last spring and was named the 2022 Empire 8 Outdoor Track Athlete and Empire 8 Rookie of the Year. She was the 2022 E8 Indoor Champion in the 200-meters and swept 2022 E8 Outdoor Championships in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dash events.
