Below are the Empire 8 Players of the Week, released on January 2, 2023, for games played from December 19-December 31. It is the 17th Empire 8 weekly honors release of the 2022-23 season. Sports featured include men’s and women’s basketball.
 
MEN’S BASKETBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Daniel Cook, St. John Fisher, So., G, Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon
Cook was named MVP of the Carol V. DeCosta Go for the Goal Tournament hosted by Medgar Evers College on Dec. 29-30 after averaging 21.5 points, 13.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 block per game in a pair of wins. On Thursday, Cook put up 19 points to go along with 11 boards and five assists in a win over Misericordia. He followed that up with his second straight double-double, tallying 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting, 15 rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block in a 96-74 win over SUNY Canton in the title game.
 
CO-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Jaylen Savage, Nazareth, Fr., G, Elmsford, NY/Alexander Hamilton
Savage continues to play a key role for the nationally ranked Golden Flyers, recording a pair of double-digit scoring efforts as Nazareth went 2-0 in the Clark University Holiday Tournament on Dec. 29-30. He led Nazareth with 16 points in the win over Anna Maria and was one of five double-digit scorers for Nazareth with 13 points in the win over host Clark on Friday. It is Savage’s third E8 weekly honor of the season.
 
CO-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Dayion Thompson, Utica, Fr., G, Beacon, NY/Kimball Union Academy
Thompson had a strong week in the Utica University Classic, averaging 15.0 points per contest. He poured in 14 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists against Delhi on Thursday, taking over in overtime with eight points. Against Oswego on Friday, Thompson dropped 16 points and collected two rebounds and a steal. It is Thompson’s second E8 weekly honor of the season.
 
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Gillian Flint, Alfred, Sr., G, Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford
Flint hit multiple season-highs during the Lycoming College Hoops for Hounds Classic on Dec. 29-30, as she helped the Saxons go 2-0, with wins over Goucher College and Baruch College. She scored a season-high 18 points against Baruch, hitting season-bests in field goals made with six, free throws made with four and free throw percentage, going 4-of-5 from the stripe. She began the week with 14 points, five boards and four steals against Goucher.
 
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Brielle Reidinger, Nazareth, Fr., F, Easton, PA/Wilson Area
Reidinger led Nazareth in scoring in both games as the Golden Flyers won the Mauro Panaggio Memorial Tournament in Daytona Beach on Dec. 19-20. She scored 14 points in the opening game against Thiel and added a team-leading eight rebounds. In the championship game against Brockport, she added 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead Nazareth in both categories and also handed out six assists. She was 11-for-11 from the free throw line and finished the weekend 15-for-15 from the line. It is her second E8 weekly honor of the season.
