BUFFALO, NY – The Medaille University men's basketball team grabbed an exciting conference win over the Keuka Wolves tonight. The Mavericks won 77-61.
The Mavs won the jump ball and went right to the basket to score the first points of the night.
Colby Moultrie (Buffalo, NY, Canisius) scored the mid-range jumper. The Wolves answered, but so did
Dante Moultrie (Buffalo, NY, North Tonawanda). The Wolves pulled ahead at 17:01, but C. Moultrie sunk a three from
Mac Creek (Tampa, FL, Cambridge Christian). The Wolves answered that with seven unanswered points to put them ahead by six.
Jorarei Bile (Oxon Hill, MD, Oxon Hill) broke that streak with a three in the corner. C. Moultrie fed him the ball to get some momentum for the Mavs. At 13:46
Daunte Wilcott (Erie, PA, Mercyhurst Prep) put them back in the lead with a jumper in the paint, then scored again on the next possession to extend the lead. At 10:56, they had a 10-point lead thanks to
Oscar Wolter (Munich, Germany, ) with a nice layup in the paint.
One minute later Wilcott grabbed a steal, sending it to D. Moultrie. He found Creek waiting at the arc, who sunk the three. The Wolves turned the ball over after that, and Creek went up for another three-point attempt, but was fouled in the process. He made all three free throws, and the Mavs had a 16-point lead. They were able to keep their large lead until a Wolves three at 3:45. This was the start of a small comeback. They were only able to get within ten before the time ran out. The Mavs went into halftime up 42-32.
C. Moultrie started things off again at the beginning of the half. He made a jumper in the paint. He scored again after grabbing a defensive rebound to give the Mavs their big lead again. The Wolves were able to find the basket at 18:54 where they netted a fast-break layup. C. Moultrie answered with his own fast-break layup, this time with an assist from D. Moultrie. This was the start of a Moultrie brother connection. At 17:01 the Wolves went on a six-point run to put them within eight. Wilcott ended that with a steal at mid-court. He had a wide open lane and took it in for an electric dunk. It made the gym go wild. The Wolves weren't quitting yet, and made a layup next to get back under 10 points. They kept the streak going until they were only down by five. D. Moultrie kicked the Mavs back into gear with a three at 10:09. At 6:40 the Moultrie brother connection got hot. C. Moultrie netted a three from Dante. The Wolves turned it over on their next possession. D. Moultrie was the one to steal it, and took it straight to the basket for a good layup. The Wolves answered with a three, but Bile drove to the basket to make a layup, and was fouled in the process. He made the free throw to keep the 10-point lead. The Wolves scored another jumper, but the Moultrie connection struck again. Colby scored another three, this time in the corner, with an assist from his brother. At 4:04, on the next scoring play, they did it again! This brought the Mavs' lead to 14. They kept the momentum and pressure high, and took the win 77-61.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were C. Moultrie going 9-12, four of them from behind the arc, with 22 points, four rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Bile was next, going 4-7 with 11 points, five rebounds and one block. D. Moultrie finished going 4-6 with nine points, six rebounds, seven assists, and two steals.
The Mavs look for an Empire 8 sweep on the weekend as they will host Utica on Saturday, January 21. Tip-off is at 4:00 p.m.
