BUFFALO, NY – The Medaille University women's basketball team took on Nazareth College for a home conference game Friday evening. The Mavs upset the Golden Flyers 64-52 who currently sit second in the Empire 8 conference.

Nazareth was first on the board, but the Mavs were there to answer. Shyanne Trinh (Dorchester, MA, Stoughton), Caiden Crego (Newark, NY, Lyons), and Erin Hardick (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart) each scored in the paint which tied the score up at 6-6. Trinh hit her first three of the night and a defensive rebound from Xaneya Thomas (Binghamton, NY, Binghamton) turned into another layup from Crego. With the score tied at 13-13, the Golden Flyers tacked on six more points to go up 19-13.

The Golden Flyers extended their lead to 23-13 early in the second quarter. Hardick hit a jumper in the paint while Trinh knocked down another three to gain some momentum. An offensive rebound from Trinh turned into a layup from Ariea Garrett (Cleveland, OH, Beaumont). Both teams played point-for-point with Hardick leading the charge to put the Mavs ahead 29-26 at the half.

A block from Thomas helped the Mavs flip the script to go up 33-26 early in the third. The Mavs played well defensively, but the Golden Flyers bounced back scoring eight-straight points to take the lead. Medaille found their rhythm on offense again with four different Mavericks adding points. The Mavs closed out the third quarter up 44-40.

The first two minutes went scoreless until Nazareth hit a free throw. Garrett and Janell Steed (Buffalo, NY, Sacred Heart Academy) responded in the paint to put Medaille ahead by seven with 7:20 left to play. Nazareth threatened the Medaille lead, but strong defensive rebounding from Medaille limited their chances. Layups from Garrett and Hardick kept the Mavs out front and a deep three from Trinh put Medaille ahead by 13. The Mavs took over the rest of the game, winning 64-52.

Hardick led offensively with 22 points going 9-15 and 4-5 from the line earning five rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Trinh added 17 points going 6-17 with three 3-pointers and five rebounds. Garrett finished with a double-double scoring ten points with 13 rebounds.

The Mavs return to play tomorrow for another home conference game against St. John Fisher. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
