Zac Boyes of the SUNY Cortland football team was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week on Tuesday, Nov. 14. Boyes earned national honors for the second time this season and is one of seven individual players or groups from Cortland to be part of the D3football.com Team of the Week in 2023.
Boyes, who earned his fifth Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Week honor of 2023 on Monday, completed 24 of 32 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns and ran 15 times for 125 yards in Cortland's 38-28 win at No. 14 Ithaca in the annual Cortaca Jug game. He capped the day with two vital runs with less than five minutes remaining - an 8-yard carry on fourth-and-2 from Cortland's 34-yard line and, two plays later, a 46-yard run to the Ithaca 12-yard line that set up a field goal to create the final 10-point margin.
Boyes in the midst of an incredible season for Empire 8 Champion Cortland, having completed 165-of-226 passes this season, a 73.0 percent completion percentage, 2,565 yards, 30 passing touchdowns and just three interceptions in 10 games. In addition, he has rushed 85 times for 505 yards and six rushing touchdowns. Boyes has four 300-yard passing games and has had five games with at least four touchdowns (passing or rushing) this season.
The native of Buffalo, NY is third nationally with a 209.6 passing efficiency rating, fourth in completion percentage, 12th in touchdowns and 14th in passing yards per completion (15.56). Boyes is the leader of a potent Cortland offense that is averaging 50 points per game (ninth in Division III) and 527.5 yards of offense per game, which is fourth-best nationally. Cortland is out-scoring its opponents, 500-163 this season.
SUNY Cortland will make its third straight appearance in the NCAA Division Football Championship Tournament and will travel to Beverly, MA to play Commonwealth Coast Conference Champion Endicott College at noon Saturda, Nov. 18 from Hempstead Stadium. Both teams are 9-1 on the season. Cortland is ranked No. 11 in the D3football.com poll and No. 13 in the AFCA Division III poll. Endicott is ranked 14th in both polls.
SUNY Brockport and Utica University are also in action with bowl games on Saturday. Utica makes the short trip to Geneva, NY to take on Hobart College in the ECAC's Clayton Chapman Bowl at 1 p.m., while Brockport heads to Pittsburgh, PA to face Carnegie Mellon University in the ECAC's Asa Bushnell Bowl, whick begins at 5 p.m.
