CAMBRIDGE, MA – The Alfred University women's volleyball team fell in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball National Championship to No. 19 nationally-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Thursday evening in three sets. The Saxons (14-14, 5-3 Empire 8) dropped set scores of 25-8, 25-11 and 25-16 to the Engineers (30-4, 9-2 NEWMAC).
"This team has been through a lot. Last year, we had 10 people on our roster, and to go from that, to winning an Empire 8 Championship and playing in the NCAA Tournament has been a dream come true," Head Coach
Mike Honeycutt said. "The way that they played for each other, is phenomenal. We truly took it all in, started the season off a little rough, but put it all together at the right time and we got it here. I couldn't be prouder of them as a coach."
The Saxons were led by
Fiona McNeil (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) with four kills and a block assist.
Jamie Chun (Hilo, HI/Hilo) had nine digs and one kill.
Darian Ortiz (Santa Fe, NM/St. Michael's) added five digs and an ace.
AU's season comes to an end after breaking multiple school records for the team as well as placing many individual Saxons up in the leaderboards. The Saxons claimed their first ever Empire 8 Championship title by defeating the three teams that beat them in the regular season.
