Empire 8 Champion Hartwick Has 2023 Season Conclude with NCAA Tournament First Round Loss at No. 16 Rowan

Hartwick won its second straight Empire 8 Championship and end 2023 season with a 12-6 record

GLASSBORO, N.J. – The Hartwick field hockey team (12-6) saw their season come to an end in the Opening Round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament with a 5-0 loss at No. 16 Rowan University on Wednesday afternoon. Rowan improves to 12-7 on the season.
 
The Profs picked up the first goal in the seventh minute of action after tapping in a cross that was deflected by Hartwick goalkeeper, Ashley Luppens (Wading River, N.Y.).

However, the Hawks rallied back earning three straight corners against Rowan. Unfortunately, a handful of near misses from the Hawks kept them from finding the equalizer.

Rowan extended their lead in the second quarter on a breakaway reigning NFHCA National Player of the Week, Vanessa DiDonato ad led 2-0 at the intermission.

The Profs continued to put pressure on the Hawks in the third quarter, eventually taking a 3-0 lead on a scrum in front of the cage. Rowan executed on a corner in the last minute of play in the third quarter, extending their lead to 4-0.

Rowan would rounded out their scoring in the 49th minute of action to secure their 5-0 win over the Hawks.

Hartwick posted 10 shots while the Profs got off 15.  However, only two of the Hawks' shots were on goal.The two teams also forced the other into fouls in the circle with Hartwick earning 16 penalty corners and Rowan earning 15.
 
Julie Ruzzi (High Falls, N.Y.) led the Hawks offensively, getting off seven shots, two of which were on-goal.
