ROCHESTER, NY – The Nazareth women's soccer team will see a familiar foe in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship on Saturday as the Golden Flyers will travel to William Smith for an 11 a.m. contest. Nazareth (8-4-6) earned the Empire 8 automatic berth, while the Herons (13-0-4), ranked seventh in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll, earned the automatic bid from the Liberty League after a 1-0 victory over RIT. The Golden Flyers and Herons played a regular season game on October 18 in Geneva, a game William Smith won 2-0.
The other contest will feature Bowdoin (9-4-5) and Swarthmore (12-3-2) at 1:30 p.m. The advancing teams will meet on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Bowdoin earned an at-large bid to the NCAAs after falling 2-1 to Amherst in the NESCAC Championship game. Swarthmore also earned an at-large bid after falling in the semifinals to Franklin and Marshall in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference tournament.
Nazareth is making its 13
th tournament appearance all under the tutelage of head coach Gail Mann who is in her 31
st season behind the bench.
Nazareth and William Smith have met three other times in the NCAAs (1999, 2000, and 2002). Nazareth won 2-0 at William Smith in 1999, fell 2-1 at Nazareth in 2001, and fell 2-1 (4-3 in Pks) in 2002.
Tickets are $6 for general admissions, $3 for senior citizens, military personnel and students (ages 13-college), children ages 3-12 are $2. Children under 3-years old are admitted free.
