Below are the Empire 8 Players of the Week, released on December 18, 2023, for games played from December 11 – December 17. It is the 16th Empire 8 weekly honors release of the 2023-24 season. Sports featured include men’s and women’s basketball.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Tyler Cardello, Elmira, So., F, Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain
Cardello led the way with a career-best 36 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the floor (67 percent), three made 3-pointers and a 13-for-16 effort from the foul line to go along with 11 rebounds, four assists and two blocks in Elmira’s 103-90 win over Penn College last Monday. Cardello, who leads the E8 in scoring, averaging 23.2 points per game this season, earned his second E8 weekly accolade of 2023-24.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Molly Benetti, Nazareth, So., F, Syracuse, NY/West Genesee
Benetti smashed her career best scoring effort with 26 points in a road win over Lycoming Saturday. Benetti shot 13-for-18 (72.2 percent) from the floor and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds in 26 minutes of action. Her previous high was 17 points earlier this season.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Vanessa Hall, Utica, Fr., F, Whitesville, NY/Whitesville Central
Hall scored a game-high 24 points to go along with three rebounds, two assists and two steals in Saturday’s 78-66 win at SUNY Morrisville. She shot 10-for-22 from the field and hit three 3-point field goals. Hall, who leads the Empire 8 in scoring, averaging 17.1 points per game, earned her second E8 weekly accolade of 2023-24.
