When Did You Become a Captain? /How Long Have You Served in That Role?
I have been a leader on the team for 2 years.

What Are Your Duties as Team Captain?
Some of the duties as a leader on the team is serving on the leadership council which includes about 6-8 people, leading pre-season and helping anyone with any questions they may have about the sport or practice. It also includes supporting the team and creating a good team atmosphere.

What Type of Leader Are You? I am the type of leader that leads by example and is approachable and encouraging.

What Qualities Do You Think A Team Leader Should Have? I think that a team can have many different qualities. Some characteristics of a great leader are someone that is approachable, knowledgeable, motivating, good communicator, caring and able to lead by example.

Any Interesting or Exciting Internships You Have Done or Are Currently Working On?
I interned with an insurance company in high school, and I did a tax internship in college.

Plans After Graduation: I am going to be a Field Artillery Officer in the Army.

What Do You See Yourself Doing in 10-15 Years/What is Your Ultimate Professional Goal: I would like to remain Active Duty in the Army for 4-5 years and then switch to National guard. When I am in the National Guard, I would like to start a career as an Accountant and get my MBA at some point.

How Has Playing Collegiately and in the Empire 8 Prepared You for Life After College: Running collegiately has affected my life after college because it has taught me many leadership traits that will affect my career in the military as a leader and it has shown me discipline and time management skills.

Favorite Athletic Memory from Your Time in College:
Some of my favorite athletic memories are from our away meets to Boston because we get the opportunity to spend more times with each other and really get to know each other. Our coach calls them “business trips” and they are, but our team has a great way of making these business trips fun. One of my favorite things is when we find every opportunity to play card games, even if it is in a van.

Greatest Mentors (On or Off Campus): Some of my greatest mentors in life are my high school track coach (Freestone), College Coaches (Hager, Sortore, Sabato), and my ROTC Cadre (LTC Luckie).

What Have You Learned About Yourself from Being a Captain:
Being a leader on the team has taught me a lot about my leadership style, what things I am good at and what things I need to improve on.

One Thing Most People Do Not Know About You: Some things a lot of people don’t know about me is that I love to rock climb and I took swing dance lessons when I was younger.

Advice for Younger Teammates/Student-Athletes and Future Captains: My advice would be to enjoy your team, get to know as many people as possible, and always cheer each other on. Some advice I would have for a captain or anyone in college is to figure out what impact you want to leave on your school or team and strive for that goal. It can be big or small, but it is something to strive for as a leader. I would also say to always try your best but never dwell in past races or games, focus on the future ones and enjoy your time as a college athlete.

The Empire 8 Conference's “Captains” Series features a student-athlete from one of its member institutions in a leadership role which focuses on how being in that role has helped them as a student-athlete and person in addition to preparing for life after college.
