Host Nazareth leads after Day One of 2023 Empire 8 Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship

Host Nazareth College is in the lead after day one of the 2023 Empire 8 Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship, held at the Golisano Training Center on the campus of Nazareth.
 
The Golden Flyers has 98 team points and holds a 24-point lead over second-place St. John Fisher University, who has 74 points. Utica University is third overall with 31 points, while Houghton University is fourth with 26 points.
 
It was a night to celebrate three-time champions, as Houghton’s Amanda Burrichter won her third straight league title in the mile, crossing the finish line first in 5:14.19. Jane Fahy of Utica won her third consecutive E8 shot put championship, with a toss of 13.24 meters.
 
Samantha Shea of St. John Fisher earned the victory in the 400-meters for the second consecutive season in a time of 57.87 seconds.

Nazareth’s Brenna Johnson took the win in the long jump for the second straight season, with a leap of 5.66 meters or 18-feet, 7 inches. She finished a half inch ahead of Veronica Duell of St. John Fisher and an inch ahead of Michaela Kurbs in one of the closest long jump finishes in league history.

Nazareth first-year Isabel Morse led a 1-4 sweep for the Golden Flyers in the  pole vault, clearing 3.40 meters. The Golden Flyers claimed 27 points in the event.

Burrichter also was part of the winning distance medley relay team from Houghton, teamming with Noelle Linenfelser, Alexandria Wisniewski and Kyra Binney to cross the finish line first in a time of 13:06.84.

St. John Fisher’s Lauren DeMichele won the 5,000-meter run in a time of 18:35.12.

For the first time since 2007, the pentathlon was held at the indoor championships. Utica's Laura Meade won the 2023 Empire 8 pentathlon by 38 points over Nazareth's Hannah Ragule, compiling 2,955 points. She was the top finisher in the 60-meter hurdles and long jump and was second best in the 800-meters.
 
Action continues Saturday morning from Nazareth at 10 a.m., as the Golden Flyers look to earn their first league title.
