Host Nazareth College holds a slight lead after Friday’s action at the 2023 Empire 8 Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship, held at the Golisano Training Center on the campus of Nazareth.
The Golden Flyers, who are looking for their first league title, have 80 team points, 16 ahead of Utica University. Three-time defending champion St. John Fisher University is third overall with 29 points and Houghton University is right behind in fourth with 28.
All-American Hunter Logan of Utica, who is among the top throwers in the nation, won the shot put for the second consecutive season with a toss of 15.82 meters.
Nazareth won three events on events on Friday. The distance medley relay team of Kenny Williams, Joseph Nettles, Lucas Sharron and Ethan Glashauser emerged victorious in a time of 10:49.64, while Ben Lewis took the 400-meter dash in 51.10 seconds. Cade Eells won the mile in a time of 4:26.62.
Houghton's Caleb Kasper led a 1-2 finish with teammate Zach Tucker in the 5,000-meters. Kasper outdueled his teammate by just under a second in a time of 16:08.83.
Jason Bletsko of Houghton won the pole vault, clearing 4.00 meters, while St. John Fisher's Matthew Stasiw took the long jump with an impressive leap of 7.09 meters.
Houghton's Malachi Yeager holds a 207-point lead over Andrew Wieder in the heptathlon after four events Friday. The group will compete in the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meters Satutday to crown a league champion.
