Nazareth Claims 2022-23 Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship; Golden Flyers Earn First Title in Program History

Host Nazareth College won the 2022-23 Empire 8 Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship, held at the Golisano Training Center on Feb. 24-25. The Golden Flyers finished with 178 points to win their first Empire 8 Championship in program history. Utica University was the runner-up with 151 points, while three-time defending champion St. John Fisher University placed third.
 
Nazareth won six events over the weekend. Sophomore Cade Eells led the way for the Golden Flyers, securing 26 points to earn 2023 Empire 8 Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Meet honors. Eells won the mile run, crossing the finish line first in a time of 4:26.62 and was runner-up in both the 800-meters (1:58.95) and 3,000-meter run (8:55.95).
 
Utica senior jumper Zuriel Wright was named the 2023 Empire 8 Indoor Field Athlete of the Meet. He won the high jump, clearing 2.00 meters, placed second in the long jump with a leap of 6.86 meters and was third in the triple jump with a leap of 13.09 meters.
 
Houghton's Malachi Yeager won the Empire 8's first heptathlon since 2007. He outlasted second place finisher Andrew Wieder of Utica by just under 200 points with a score of 4,464 points. Yeager was the top finisher in the long jump and pole vault and was runner-up in the 60-meters, shot put and high jump.

On Saturday, Nazareth's Kaleb Luton won the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.17 meters. He was also runner-up in the triple jump.

Nazareth's 4 x 400-meter relay team of Mike Welch, Michael Puglisi, Gavin McAllister and Ben Lewis rolled to a two second win in the final event of the meet.

Utica's Antwan Kelly repeated as weight throw champion. Kelly, who is one of the top throwers in Division III, recorded a winning toss of 16.98 meters to narrowly defeat Russell Sage College standout John Coddington who fired a program mark 16.70 meters.

George Mecca of Alfred University won his second straight 800-meter title, defeating Eells by just under a second in 1:58.00

St. John Fisher's Curtis Cuvilly annexed the 60-meter dash in 7.16 seconds, while Ivan Lopez-Testillano took the triple jump with a leap of 14.09 meters.
