Empire 8 Trio to Compete in 2023 NCAA Division III Basketball Tournaments

St. John Fisher men and women and Utica men to represent the Empire 8 at the national tournament

The St. John Fisher University men’s and women’s basketball teams, along with the Utica University men’s basketball program will represent the Empire 8 Conference in the 2023 NCAA Division III Basketball Championship, with first and second round action set to begin March 3-4.

The St. John Fisher women won its second straight Empire 8 Championship and seventh in program history last weekend, earning the league’s automatic berth. The Cardinals are in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year and 19th time in program history. St. John Fisher will head to Smith College and take on Marymount University in opening round action.
 
St. John Fisher’s men’s program won the Empire 8 Tournament as a No. 4 seed over the weekend, their 10th league title in program history. The Cardinals are in the NCAA Tournament for the 16th time in program history and first time since 2020. St. John Fisher will head to Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania to take on Whitworth University.
 
Utica broke an Empire 8 single-season record with 17 league wins, rolling to the E8 Regular Season Championship. The Pioneers earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, which is also the conference’s first men’s basketball at-large selection since the 2012-13 season. Utica, who enters with a 22-4 record, will head to Rowan University to take on Babson College in the opening round. The Pioneers are making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since the 2005-06 season.
