Eight Empire 8 student-athletes competed at the 2023 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships from the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama on March 10-11.
Samantha Shea and St. John Fisher and Mackenzie Mix of Utica competed in the 400-meter dash. Shae qualified for the finals with the eighth best time in Friday's preliminaries with a time of 56.82 seconds but was disqualified in Saturday's final. Mix finished 16th in the 400-meter dash prelims with a time of 58.18 seconds.
On Friday' Nazareth's Lea Richard placed 17th overall in the weight throw with a toss of 16.33 meters. The Empire 8 had three student-athletes compete in the long jump.Veronica Duell of St. John Fisher finished 10th with a leap of 5.50 meters. Duell's teammate Michaela Kurbs was 16th with a jump of 5.39 meters, while Brenna Johnson of Nazareth was 17th with a leap of 5.38 meters.
On Saturday, Ivan Lopez-Testillano of St. John Fisher placed 17th in the triple jump with a leap of 13.94 meters. Zuriel Wright of Utica finished 18th in the high jump, clearing 1.98 meters.
