Utica University head men's basketball coach
Sean Coffey has been named the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, as announced by the ECAC. In addition, Alfred University graduate student Brewster Marshall earned All-ECAC Second Team honors.
Coffey led Utica to its second-straight Empire 8 regular season title this year as well as to its second-straight 20-win season. The team's 23 wins this season tied the program record for wins in a single season. Under his leadership, the Pioneers were selected to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time since the 2006-07 season.
In the tournament, Utica knocked off Babson College in the First Round, 72-60, before falling to host Rowan University in the Second Round, 83-72. Previously named the 2022-23 Empire 8 Coach of the Year (as well as the 2021-22 Empire 8 Coach of the year), this is Coffey's first ECAC Coach of the Year honor.
Marshall, an MBA student at Alfred, was the only player from the Empire 8 to earn a spot on the lists. He closes out his stellar career with 1,452 points, averaging 13.7 points per game. He totaled 773 rebounds for an average of 7.3 a game. Marshall made 559 field goals with 107 of them being 3-pointers and he shot 74.7% from the free throw line, hitting 227-of-304 shots. He ended his career with 153 blocks, 133 assists and 82 steals.
Marshall was a member of the 2018-19 Empire 8 Championship team and was a four-time All-Empire 8 selection, culminating with first team accolades in 2022-23. Marshall ended the year on a high note, helping the Saxons clinch the 2022-23 ECAC Division III Men's Basketball title with a home win over Alvernia and was on the All-Tournament Team as the ECAC Championship Most Valuable Player. On the year, he totaled a career-high 470 points, a career-high 223 rebounds (career-high 164 defensive rebounds), a career-high 180 field goals made, a career-high 54 3-pointers, a career-high 47 assists and tied his career-high in blocks with 38.
The ECAC is an eighty-four-year-old organization with well over 200 member schools across all three NCAA Divisions - I, II and III. The ECAC exists to enhance the experience of student-athletes participating in intercollegiate athletics and provides great value for universities and colleges by sponsoring championships, leagues, bowl games, tournaments and other competitions throughout the Northeast. The ECAC's esports platform is growing and now totals more than sixty colleges and universities and is expanding the geographic footprint for the conference nationally. The ECAC is also sponsoring competitions and leagues involving other varsity and club sports that do not fall under the umbrella of the NCAA.
