ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University softball team swept Fredonia on Tuesday evening in a non-conference double-header with a game one shutout and a game two scoring spree.
The Saxons (19-11-1, 9-1 Empire 8) shut out the Blue Devils (4-24, 3-7 SUNYAC) in game one, 2-0. Then, the offense sparked in game two to ignite the scoreboard, 13-2.
Game One
Alfred University – 2 | Fredonia – 0
Arden Hatch (Orangevale, CA/St. Francis) earned her 10
th win of the season as she threw her first no-hitter of her collegiate career. In her 6.0 innings pitched, she struck out 10 batters with no walks or hit-by-pitch. One Blue Devil runner got on base and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but other than that, no one from Fredonia touched third base all game.
Megan Bennett (Athens, PA/Athens Area) came in for relief in the seventh inning to pick up her second save of the season while also giving up no hits to Fredonia batters.
A third inning error by Fredonia's centerfielder allowed
Mya Wells (San Ramon, CA/California) to reach third and round to home for what would go on to be the game-winning run. The game's lone RBI was from
Jessica Remm (Carmel, IN/Carmel) as she was walked with bases loaded, pushing
Molly Lawson (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA/Trabuco Hills) home in the top of the seventh.
Allison O'Toole (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley) was the only player in the first game with two hits, going 2-for-3. Wells added the game's lone stolen base, the one that put her in position to score the winning run.
Game Two
Alfred University – 13 | Fredonia – 2
Once again, the Saxons' first inning with a lead was good enough for the win as AU pasted three runs up on the board in the first inning. Remm scored first on a passed ball from the Fredonia catcher. O'Toole tripled to right center field to bring Wells home and
Darby McEnery (Corona, CA/Norco) drove home O'Toole with a single for the 3-0 lead that would go on to be enough for a win.
The Saxon offense didn't stop there as Alfred University scored another four runs in the top of the second inning. Lawson doubled to left center field to bring
Raygan Ashmore (Taft, CA/Taft Union) across the plate. Lawson then scored herself on a wild pitch to make it 5-0. Remm hit her 12
th double of the year to bring
Ashley Lugo (Hesperia, CA/Oak Hills) home just before crossing home plate herself when O'Toole hit a sacrificed flyball left field's foul territory, upping the score to 7-0 before two complete innings.
Fredonia scored its first run of the day with a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the third, right after Remm singled up the middle to score both Lawson and
Isabella Carrillo (Van Nuys, CA/Birmingham Community Charter) home for the 9-0 lead. After the bottom of the inning, AU still held the mercy-rule lead, 9-1.
For insurance purposes, AU tacked on four more runs in the top of the fourth as
Isabella Orozco (Burbank, CA/Village Christian) doubled to left field to order McEnery home. She then scored the 11
th run with a Lugo double to center field that also pushed Lawson to third base. Remm ended the Saxon scoring with a single down the left field line that drove home Lawson and Lugo for the 13-1 advantage before Fredonia scored its last run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Remm had a perfect, 4-for-4 nightcap with a collegiate career-high five RBI as she added two runs. Lugo, O'Toole and Lawson each went 2-for-3. Lawson scored a team-high three runs to tie her career-high and Lugo scored twice to round out the runners with multiple scores. O'Toole joined Remm as the only other player to have more than one RBI in the nightcap. The entire starting lineup, spots 1-through-9 all had runs and all had hits.
Mikaela Perez (Pomona, CA/Diamond Ranch) picked up the win in the circle, striking out one of the 12 batters faced while giving up four hits and an earned run.
Ty Thomas (Bolingbrook, IL/Bolingbrook) came in for the final two innings with one strikeout, two hits, an earned run and a walk.
Alexa Woluewich (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream) and Lawson had the only stolen bases in game two.
The Saxons will next return to Empire 8 action as they travel to Medaille University on Wednesday, April 26 for a double-header, starting at 3:00pm.
