ASHLAND, VA – The St. John Fisher University softball team (28-13) dropped a 3-2 decision to Ramapo College (33-12-1) in the first round of NCAA Regionals hosted by Randolph Macon College on Thursday afternoon.
The Cardinals took an early lead but made two errors that led to three runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Fisher would get on the board in the second inning, as Amalia DeMartino doubled to center field and moved to third a batter later. Kelly Cournoyer would drive DeMartino home with a single to left field.
The Roadrunners scored their three runs in the bottom of the third after a sacrifice fly and two throwing errors by the Cardinals.
In the top of the fourth, Fisher earned a run back starting with a single by Mari Spitz. DeMartino and Allie Klonowski each tallied singles of their own to load the bases and force a pitching change. Cournoyer came to bat and registered another RBI with a single, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Unfortunately, the Cardinals could not put across the tying run and dropped their first game.
Jess Patterson allowed just one hit in the six-inning complete game, allowing one earned run, while striking out seven batters. DeMartino was 2-for-2 with a run scored and walk. Cournoyer finished the day 2-for-3 with two RBI.
The Cardinals will take on the host Yellowjackets on Friday, May 19 with a start time of 1:30 p.m. in an elimination game.
