BALTIMORE, MD – The St. John Fisher University baseball team (30-13) had its 16-game winning streak snapped with a 10-3 loss to No. 20 Randolph-Macon College (32-13) in the opener of the 2023 NCAA Division III Baseball Regional held at Johns Hopkins University,
Up first to bat, Noah Campanelli, the 2023 Empire 8 Player of the Year homered on the second pitch he saw to right-center field, giving Fisher the early 1-0 lead.
Randolph Macon quickly responded, scoring four in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Myles Webb.
Down 5-1 in the fifth inning, Jack Migliore walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a groundout and would eventually score on a second wild pitch to cut the Randolph-Macon lead to 5-2.
The Yellowjackets would add a run in the sixth and four in the eighth inning before Campanelli hit his second solo home run of the day in the ninth inning to complete the scoring.
Patrick McGuire suffered his first loss of the 2023 season on the mound for the Cardinals, allowing five hits and six runs (five earned) over five innings of work. Hunter Walsh and Logan Persse would pitch the final three innings in relief.
Campanelli went 3-for-5 with the two solo homers, while stealing his 51st base of the season. Brian Norsen added two hits, while Ethan Perry also singled.
Webb was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead the way for Randolph-Macon. Hunter Cole and Carter Johnson added two hits apiece. On the mound, Hayden Snelsire scattered five hits and two runs over eight innings, while striking out 17 batters to pick up the win.
Up next, the Cardinals take on Penn State Altoona in an elimination game at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Johns Hopkins University.
