Below are the Empire 8 Players of the Week, released on May 22, 2023, for games played from May 15-May 21. It is the 37th and final Empire 8 weekly honors release of the 2022-23 season. Sports featured include men’s and women’s outdoor track and field.
 
MEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Cade Eells, Nazareth, So., Distance, Ithaca, NY/Ithaca
Eells set a school record and moved into the top-50 nationally in 3,000-meter steeplechase, as he clocked a time of 9:15.23 to place fifth in the event at the 2023 All-Atlantic Region Championships at Susquehanna University on May 17-18. His time was less than five seconds shy of the all-time Empire 8 record, set in 2016. It is his second weekly honor of the outdoor season.
 
FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Hunter Logan, Utica, Jr., Throws, Fort Plain, NY/Herkimer Community College
Logan, a 2022 All-American in the shot put, secured a position in the 2023 NCAA Championships in the event by recording a throw of 16.72 meters (54’10.25”) at the 2023 All-Atlantic Region Championships at Susquehanna University on May 17-18. He finished second in the event and moved into the 10th among all Division III student-athletes in the shot put.
 
WOMEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Mackenzie Mix, Utica, So., Sprints/Hurdles, Camden, NY/Camden
Mix recorded a personal-best time of 1:04.87 in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2023 All-Atlantic Region Championships at Susquehanna University on May 17-18. She finished eighth overall in the event and recorded the 64th-best time in Division III to date this season.
 
CO-FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Isabel Morse, Nazareth, Fr., Pole Vault, Norwood, NY/Norwood-Norfolk
Morse was the highest Empire 8 finisher and broke Nazareth’s program record in the pole vault at the 2023 All-Atlantic Region Championships at Susquehanna University on May 17-18, clearing 3.70 meters (12’1.5”). Morse moved into the top-50 nationally with the 27th best performance in Division III this season.
 
CO-FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Anne Spila, Alfred, So., Multi-Events, Mechanicsburg, PA/Trinity
Spila broke the Alfred University program record and was the highest Empire 8 finisher in the heptathlon, recording 4,071 points at the 2023 All-Atlantic Region Championships at Susquehanna University on May 17-18 to finish fourth overall in the event. She set personal records in the shot put and 800-meters. Spila recorded the 54th best performance in Division III to date this season. It is her third E8 weekly accolade of the season.
