St. John Fisher University, Utica University, Hartwick College, Medaille University, Nazareth University and Houghton University represented the Empire 8 Conference in the final 2022-23 LEARFIELD Director’s Cup Standings. A total of 323 Division III institutions were represented throughout the year.
The LEARFIELD Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and
USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships.
St. John Fisher, the 2022-23 Empire 8 Commissioner’s Cup Champions, used a strong spring season to place 51st nationally with 367 points. The Cardinals scored 242 points during the spring, as baseball, softball, men's golf and men’s and women’s lacrosse and men's volleyball competed in the NCAA Tournament. St. John Fisher won five Empire 8 Championship titles during the spring season.
St. John Fisher also had its men's and women’s basketball teams compete in 2022-23 NCAA Division III Championships. Last fall, women’s volleyball competed in the 2022 NCAA Division III Championships. Overall, the Cardinals won nine Empire 8 Championships during the 2022-23 season.
Utica placed 101st nationally with 173.8 points, as Jane Fahyearned All-American honors in the shot put at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Earlier in the year, Utica won its first NCAA Tournament game in football, while advanving to the round of 16. During the winter, Utica advanced to the round of 32 in men's basketball after tying a program record with 23 victories, while its men's hockey program advanced to the national quarterfinals and won 25 games.
Hartwick, Medaille and Nazareth finished tied for 238th in Division III with 50 points apiece. Hartwick's field hockey and women's tennis teams won Empire 8 Championships and competed in the NCAA Tournament. Medaille won the Empire 8 Men's Soccer Championship in its first season as a league member and also had its women's bowling team compete at the NCAA Tournament. Nazareth competed in the 2022 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships after winning its second straight league title, while its women's hockey team advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season after winning the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) title in double overtime.
Houghton recorded 25 points in 2022-23 on the strength of its second Empire 8 men's tennis championship in three seasons and automatic berth into the 2023 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship Tournament.
