The NCAA Division III Management Council has endorsed criteria for a mental health hardship waiver for student-athletes to be considered at the Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committees' October meeting.

The measure was proposed by the Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee at the 2023 NCAA convention. The proposal would build off of the current requirements for a hardship waiver to help provide flexibility when dealing with a mental health condition diagnosis. They are looking to implement the new criteria during this upcoming academic year. Division III is the first division to implement this kind of waiver to student-athletes.

“We are very appreciative of the diligent work by the governance structure moving us closer to having a specific Mental Health Hardship Waiver," said Empire 8 Commissioner Chuck Mitrano. "It speaks volumes that Division III will be the first to provide appropriate criteria and relief for student-athletes dealing with significant mental health challenges. The modern student-athlete is facing unprecedented metal health difficulties and it’s vital that our policies reflect their needs. It’s another way of breaking the stigma and prioritizing mental well being.”
